Reducing Emissions

The petrochemical sector has embraced the sustainability challenge and has made substantial increases in production efficiency while steadily decreasing its energy input.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been continuously falling in the EU chemical sector since 1994 while at the same time the industry has increased production by over 60%. The EU petrochemical sector pledges to reduce its environmental footprint even more as it pursues its long-term objectives to contribute to a greener world with less GHG emissions and increased energy efficiency. Safeguarding Competitiveness

As an innovator of new technologies that improve processes and create new and better performing products, the EU petrochemical sector will need to remain competitive at a global level to be able to continue to invest and contribute as a key partner in Europe’s sustainability challenge.

Currently global sustainability regulations and targets are inconsistent, creating unfair advantages for those regions that are not as stringent in their requirements.

A Global Approach

It is crucial that authorities in the EU continue to advocate with the United Nations and global institutions such as the OECD, in favour of sustainable development in all regions to accelerate progress and avoid distortion in competition.
