The Methacrylates Sector Group (MSG) responds to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) opinion recommending the classification of Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) as a respiratory sensitizer (H334). The recommendation, based on limited evidence, must still be endorsed by CARACAL and the European Commission before legal implementation, expected no earlier than late 2025.
MSG challenges the RAC’s conclusions, highlighting inconsistencies and new evidence contradicting the classification. Investigations revealed flaws in SIC test cases, including potential confounding exposures, high peak MMA concentrations causing irritation, and individuals with pre-existing asthma. Peer-reviewed research supports MSG’s stance that MMA does not cause occupational asthma.
MSG remains committed to worker safety and continues engaging with regulatory authorities to ensure a scientifically sound assessment of MMA’s hazards.
