Higher performing (high octane) fuels such as fuel ethers play a significant role in mitigating air pollution today. Using fuel ethers as blending components of petrol increases its performance and reduces emissions that impact human health and the environment.

That was the main message highlighted by the European Fuel Oxygenates Association (EFOA) at the 21st European Forum on Eco-innovation dedicated to air quality in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 5th and 6th February 2018.

Organised jointly by the European Commission and the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU, this high-level event brought together companies, public authorities, NGOs and private organisations that showed how they succeeded in developing and implementing effective technologies to reduce air pollution.

At the session addressing how to reduce air pollution originating from transport, EFOA’s Secretary-General, Ewa Abramiuk-Lété gave a presentation on how better performing (higher octane) fuel can be a reliable and affordable solution for cleaner and sustainable mobility.

As key components for the production of high octane fuels, fuel ethers enable the reduction of air pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by 5%, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by 15% and Particulate Matter (PM) by 30%.
