In June 2018, the European Commission published its Proposal for its next Research and Innovation programme, Horizon Europe. The proposal makes it the largest EU Research and Innovation (R&I) programme so far with an estimated budget of approximately €100 billion for the period 2021 – 2027. Cefic welcomed the Proposal that recognizes the industry’s innovative and enabling role by placing the pillar of the Global Challenges & Industrial Competitiveness at the heart of the programme.

The European chemical industry invests more than €9 billion in research and innovation every year to develop technologies essential to achieving a low carbon and circular economy and to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Continuous innovation funding is key to support the chemical industry in developing necessary technologies to shape Europe’s low-carbon economy.
